Feature Request: Optional Transliteration Typing for Multilingual Languages #260

Description

@session11

Description

I would like to request support for transliteration-based typing for secondary languages (such as Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, and others) directly from the standard QWERTY keyboard layout.

For example, when the selected secondary language is Gujarati:

  • "daya" → "દયા"
  • "kem cho" → "કેમ છો"

Similarly, when Hindi is selected:

  • "namaste" → "नमस्ते"

This would allow users to type naturally using the Latin alphabet while the keyboard converts the input into the selected native script in real time.

Why this would be useful

Many multilingual users are comfortable with a QWERTY layout but still prefer writing in their native language. Transliteration typing is significantly faster and easier for many users than switching to a dedicated native-script keyboard layout.

This feature would:

  • Make multilingual typing much more convenient.
  • Reduce the learning curve for users unfamiliar with native keyboard layouts.
  • Eliminate the need to switch to another keyboard app solely for transliteration.
  • Improve accessibility for users who primarily think in their native language but are accustomed to typing on QWERTY keyboards.

Suggested implementation

Ideally, transliteration could be available as an optional input mode for supported languages. Users could choose between:

  • Native keyboard layout
  • Transliteration (QWERTY → native script)

This keeps the feature optional and preserves the existing typing experience for users who prefer native layouts.

I understand that implementing high-quality transliteration for multiple languages is a substantial task and may require language-specific dictionaries or transliteration engines. Nevertheless, I believe it would be a valuable long-term addition that would greatly enhance LeanType's multilingual capabilities.

Thank you for creating and maintaining such an excellent open-source keyboard.
